What Is BaZi? The Four Pillars of Destiny, Explained
BaZi (八字, literally "eight characters") is the Chinese system also called the Four Pillars of Destiny. Your birth year, month, day, and hour each become two calendar characters — eight characters in total, arranged in four columns or "pillars." Those eight characters describe the pattern of energy present at your birth. A BaZi reading interprets them to profile how a person operates: temperament, strengths, blind spots, and how the pattern changes over time. In Korean, the identical system is called saju.

The eight characters, briefly
Each pillar is one Heavenly Stem (of ten) plus one Earthly Branch (of twelve):
- Year pillar — ancestry, early environment, the broad backdrop.
- Month pillar — upbringing, career drive, the strongest single influence on the chart.
- Day pillar — the self and close partnership; its stem is your Day Master.
- Hour pillar — later life, output, and children; it needs an accurate birth time.
What is the Day Master?
The Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of your day pillar — the symbol that represents you. The entire chart is read relative to it: every other element is judged by whether it supports, drains, controls, or is controlled by your Day Master. Knowing your Day Master (one of ten: five elements in yin and yang form) is the first step of any BaZi reading.
What are the Ten Gods?
The Ten Gods (十神) are the ten functional relationships between your Day Master and everything else in the chart. They are the practical heart of BaZi, because they describe behavior:
- Authority roles — how you handle rules, structure, and power.
- Output roles — how you create, express, and perform.
- Resource roles — how you learn, absorb, and seek support.
- Wealth roles — how you earn, value, and handle money.
- Peer roles — how you compete, collaborate, and hold your own.
Each comes in two flavors (a "proper" and an "unconventional" form), giving ten in total. We translate all ten into plain-English archetypes in The Ten Gods as Behavioral Archetypes.
How do you read a BaZi chart?
A reading typically proceeds: identify the Day Master → weigh the five elements for balance → read the Ten Gods for behavioral tendencies → check the Luck Pillars (ten-year periods) and annual cycles for timing. The chart describes tendencies and timing windows, not fixed fate.
BaZi calculator vs a real reading
A BaZi calculator does the mechanical step — turning your birth data into the eight characters and Luck Pillars. That's arithmetic. The reading is the interpretation layer on top: what the pattern means for how you live. DaoTiming automates the calculation and then translates the interpretation into behavioral language you can actually use.
Is BaZi the same as Korean saju?
Yes — the structure is identical; only the name and cultural styling differ. See Saju vs BaZi and What Is Saju?.
